Yep..another lecture about heartworms. Whenever I am not lecturing about spaying and neutering…and keeping collars on your pets…..and microchipping….well, and other things I lecture about the importance of keeping your beloved furry one on heartworm prevention.So , the thing is, you can’t “see” heartworms, not unless you open up the dog’s heart which we don’t recommend. But you can “hear” heartworm disease. The scary thing is by the time you hear it it’s in the advance stages. NOT a death sentence IF the dog is strong enough for treatment BUT sadly many times they aren’t. The heart is congested with those nasty worms, the heart is weakened, there is fluid all around it, and its a big mess. So guess what? The good news is that it CAN be prevented by a simple pill. Or some choose to use the 6 month shot, but the bottom line is IT CAN BE PREVENTED. Yes yes we know, sometimes prevention doesn’t work, I mean nothing is 100% percent BUT if you use it, and get your pet checked at least once a year with a simple heartworm test it can be cured. What we do know is if you DON’T use prevention then that’s just dumb, really really dumb. I mean why risk it???? So here is a video of what heartworm disease “looks” like, and watch poor Chezzie’s chest, you will see she is struggling with every breath. SO preventable……she and I are taking it one day at a time. As long as she is willing to fight so am I. And that I can promise you is going to be one hell of a fight…..
