( http://ift.tt/1OjkNE4 ) (847) 680-1770Hi, I’m Dr. Rebecca Schmidt from Northern Illinois Cat Clinic, in Libertyville, Illinois. I’m here to talk with you about parasitic infection in felines. Heartworm disease in your kitty is an unseen enemy. A lot of people don’t even know that cats can develop heartworm disease. This parasitic infection is different, though, from the dog, and we’re talking indoor felines as well as outdoor felines can develop this parasitic infection. It’s carried by the mosquito, just like in the dog. The mosquito picks up the microfilaria from a dog that has heartworm, and then it can carry it to whoever; it can carry it to a dog. It can carry it to a kitty, and then it will inject that little, microscopic larvae called a microfilaria into the animal when they take a blood meal. That little microfilaria in the dog travels all the way to the heart and becomes an adult worm in the heart.
Cat Heartworm Disease Causes H.A.R.D (Feline Lung Inflammation)
In the feline, it can’t seem to find its way there; it gets trapped in the lungs, so it can’t really make it to the heart very easily. Once in a while an adult worm will make it to the heart, but it’s uncommon. So, usually the microfilaria are trapped in the lungs, and the lungs don’t like the microfilaria. There; the lungs become very inflamed. This inflammation then causes the animal , of course, to have difficulty breathing — breathing problems very much like asthma, so this disease can mimic asthma. It actually has a special name, called HARD (H.A.R.D.) If you know that when you’re talking about feline heartworm infection, you’ll sound like you really know a lot. It’s basically a respiratory disease in cats. In the dog, it’s a more heart-related disease. So it mimics asthma — very severe asthma. Asthma is difficult to control.
Cat Heartworm Disease Symptoms.
It also mimic other things; it can cause seizures. It can cause vomiting. It can cause weight loss. It can cause lethargy, so you can imagine that a kitty can have a multitude of symptoms, and they can all be related to parasitic infection. So, it’s important to have your veterinarian talk with you about how to work with this parasitic infection. We test for this infection by a blood test that will determine whether the feline has been exposed to parasites.
Cat Heartworm Disease Can Be Prevented.
We also highly recommend heartworm prevention. There are a few different kinds of heartworm prevention; there’s a little, chewy treat that I would say probably fifty per cent of the cats like — maybe sixty per cent. Forty per cent don’t like it, and there are topical medications that can be applied. Its a liquid that goes on the back of the neck, that’s very, very effective in preventing this feline disease. Therefore, we carry heartworm prevention for your convenience.
Cat Heartworm Disease Talk Is Part of Wellness Exam.
Here again, we will talk with everyone who comes in for an annual feline wellness exam . We always talk about heartworm disease and the symptoms that it can cause. It’s very important that your cat be prevented from having this and other parasitic infections. This is not a necessary disease. We have a lot of mosquitoes in the Illinois area, where we are, that carry the microfilaria . People know this from their experience with their dogs, but it also occurs in their cats. So please come and see us at the Northern Illinois Cat Clinic. We can help you understand heartworm disease better. Again, we provide you with the heartworm prevention so that you can help prevent this and other parasitic infections in your pet. Thank you.
