I serve on the board of Friends of the Little Rock Animal Village with a wonderful young woman and beloved member of our team – Betsey Robb. Betsey gives many hours to our work and as a volunteer at the city shelter. A few weeks ago, Betsey identified an very sweet canine soul by the name of Bruce. But Bruce has one big challenge – he’s part Pit Bull Terrier.

These Itty Pitties have been demonized by so many in our society. They’ve been labeled “dangerous” because of misguided prejudice forced upon them by those who use them as fighting dogs. It could have been any breed, but it has been Pit Bulls who are tortured and forced to fight, or even serve as bait dogs, for the human greed of dog fighting.

Not the case for sweet Bruce. We don’t know his story, but what Betsy discovered is the incredible love he has in his heart. Bruce loves all people, other dogs, and he’s incredibly playful and submissive too. He loves to romp in the shelter play area and does well on a leash. But even the sweetest Pitties are the most difficult breed to rehome.

Yesterday/Friday his time was up. Betsey and friends have worked all week to find a home or a foster so he wouldn’t be euthanized. And the good news is this – a fabulous family stepped up to let Bruce live with them until he can be placed.

But Bruce now has another challenge – he’s been diagnosed with heartworms, a condition caused by parasites transmitted by mosquitos that reside in the heart of a dog. Because Betsey worked so hard to get him out of the shelter and into a foster, we decided NOT to let her down. So, we’re raising money so Bruce can receive the HW treatment he so deserves. HW treatment takes about 6 weeks, and costs between 0-,000. In Little Rock, we can likely find a vet to treat Bruce for about 0.

He is such a tender and sweet boy, and he’s very happy to be out of the shelter, a lucky Pitty with a foster. Now we need to run the second lap and get him back to good health.
