Can you name this parasite that is most commonly diagnosed in dogs but is also seen in cats? The correct answer is heartworm! This video shows an immature hearworm in the microfilariae stage. Microfilariae can live in the bloodstream for up to 2 years!! (gross!)
Adult heartworms live in the heart and pulmonary arteries of an infected pet for 5-7 years! It is a common misconception that only dogs can get heartworm disease. This is NOT true; cats can also be infected. However, in cats there is no treatment currently available once they become infected. This makes monthly prevention even more important!
The good news is that heartworm disease can be prevented by ensuring that your pet gets a monthly preventative like Sentinel Spectrum (dogs) or Revolution (cats). Request a refill of prevention OR book an appointment at www.greatneckvet.com.
