Heartworm cases are on the rise at mountain animal shelters.Friday Asheville’s Brother Wolf Rescue said it had double the number of heartworm positive dogs as normal and, with treatment for just one dogging costing hundreds of dollars, the organization is struggling to handle the influx.
“I mean we just fundraise, fundraise, fundraise,” said Brother Wolf’s Joelle Warren. “Because we know it is a very treatable disease, they should not have to die from it,” she adds.
Warren says the mountain shelter system has been seeing a rising number of cases over the last several years. Heartworm is a parasite that’s spread by mosquitoes and has largely been associated with pets in the deep south or North Carolina’s coastal regions, but now it appears to be spreading.
“It’s spread by a mosquito biting a heartworm positive dog and then buzzing over and biting your dog,” said Warren. “And poof, your dog has heartworm if it’s not on heartworm prevention,” she says.
Many of the dogs coming into the shelter have been strays or kept outside, but heading into mosquito season, there are fears that if more dogs have it, more will contract. Brother Wolf is amping up fundraising efforts, so they can treat each dog that tests positive, rather than turn them away. But they also are trying to spread the word about prevention.
A monthly pill costs about , but treatment after a dog is infected could cost up to ,000.
