What are the signs you are passing a kidney stone?

It feels like you’re giving birth, and you’re a guy.

You make it sound very painful.

Kidney stones are not smooth like river stones. They are calcium and other minerals that collected into a hard mass.

That’s kind of like a stone.

Think of it more like a sharp edged crystal. And as your body tries to pass it through, the sharp edges are cutting you.

That’ll hurt.

That’s why kidney stones are compared to childbirth, but it hurts every time the car hits a bump or you’re jolted. And it continues until the kidney stone is passed or broken up or taken out.

They say the last weeks of pregnancy are so miserable that you’re ready for labor. I never thought I’d say something sounded so bad you’d look forward to surgery.

They prefer breaking it up via ultrasound to avoid surgery. But then you get smaller pieces that cut up the bladder and urethra as you pass it.

Does that happen if you pass smaller stones on your own?

Yes, but it is the truly unlucky that have a stone get stuck.

Then you can’t pass the stone or urine.

If you’re having trouble peeing, it may be a kidney stone.

Or an infection.

If you have kidney stones cutting into the urethra or slicing up your kidneys, you’ll get a lot more internal infections. Chronic bladder infections are a possible sign of kidney stones.

I don’t know if the doctor can diagnose the kidney stones, though.

They can check your urine for blood and excessive mineral levels, since your kidney stones can come out as microscopic sand as well as large shards. Or the doctor could order a sonogram and see the mass.

Kind of like when you’re pregnant.

If you have trouble peeing, at least for a guy, the other likely diagnosis is an STD or prostate problems. At least with a kidney stone, it is a problem you can admit to.

And you can treat it yourself by drinking more water.

That’s prevention, not a cure.
