Dr. Eric Haskin: Heartworm is a parasite that dogs get it and cats actually from mosquitoes. We have lots of mosquitoes in Florida. It’s a year-round problem. Some areas, they’re maybe more of seasonal thing. Heartworm disease can be fatal, particularly in cats. With dogs, they usually manifest… If they have a problem with heartworm, they usually have signs of heart disease–coughing, exercise intolerance, lethargy. There is treatment for heartworm. It is medication that we give. It usually involves a few injections. The best way is to prevent heartworms. We do that by giving dogs a monthly heartworm prevention. It’s a pill. It’s like a cookie they eat like a treat. Most common out there is something called as Heartguard. There’s another one called Interceptor. There’s even another topical, as a liquid, in the neck. It’s called Revolution. These are all used once a month. They will all prevent heartworm and we should only recommend heartworm in South Florida.
